Pay attention to how much they’re shedding
Golden Retrievers have thick, water-repellant double coats. As such, they shed a bit more than other breeds. They’ll shed moderately throughout the year, but it will ramp up at least once or twice per year depending on the season.
During these heavy shedding periods, you should brush them once every couple of days and bathe them more regularly to keep their shedding under control. When they’re only shedding moderately, you can stick to brushes once per week and baths once every six weeks.
Only trim their coat
Golden Retrievers should never receive a full haircut nor a shave. Instead, all they need is a trim around their ears, feet, neck, and tail. Doing so will help their appearance while also decreasing the risk of matting and tangles in their fur.
Cut their nails once per month
Golden Retrievers will need their nails cut just like any other dog. This can be done once per month. If you’re nervous about doing it yourself, take your dog to the vet. Most veterinarian offices will do this for free. Your vet can also teach you the best methods for clipping your dog’s nails.
Don’t use a bristle brush
When brushing your Golden Retriever’s coat, you can use any brush except a bristle brush. Bristle brushes cannot get through a Golden’s thick coat. Try looking for brushes that are designed for thick coats.
Use dog shampoo when bathing
Some people think they can use human shampoo on their dogs. This is a mistake. Dogs need a special shampoo that you can usually get at any pet store near you. These shampoos should contain Oatmeal and Vitamin E to keep your Golden’s coat healthy. Before you buy your shampoo, though, make sure your Golden Retriever doesn’t have any skin conditions that may require a special brand.
